A Fine Meal on the Zocalo

Tlaxcala is a sleepy town about two hours east of the Distrito Federal. For a variety of reasons, it is a tourist destination for Mexicans...not so much for us from the EEUU. Finding a good meal for a great price is always delightful, to have it served by the owner who is fluent in English (in Tlaxcala) is a real bonus. At the Restaurante Sonetta, near the south corner of the zocalo, Vicente served a superb afternoon menu del dia for an incredibly small price. Our three courses consisted of cheese and aoli with tiny tortilla triangles, a Mexican twist on chicken cordon bleu and a neat dessert of pudding and wafer. This delightful repast was washed down with a scrumptious pineapple drink. Everything was very tasty and elegantly presented. The room was distressed mission architecture. For some reason I felt like I was dining in a cozy corner of Diocletian’s Baths. We had a wonderful experience and if you show up in the early afternoon, I’m certain that you will be pleased. Vicente offers a larger menu in the evening and I can only assume that it is equally elegant and delicious.
