birding in the Yucatan

we did a 6-day tour with this company led by their birding expert, Miguel Amar. one of the best tours we’ve ever done and a very special experience. Miguel is a licensed historical guide and an expert birder, so while we were looking for birds at ruins we got lots of historical information about the Mayan lifestyle and history. FYI, birding is really hiking with binoculars, so don’t be afraid to try and sign up for at least a day of birding with Miguel. the staff at MexicKanTours was also excellent and were all very courteous and bilingual.

A Tulum Birds, Nature and Culture Experience

Our primary objective was birdwatching, but Miguel (guide) enriched that excellent experience with in-depth information about the geography, topography, culture and history - a holistic day of the Mayan territory here in Tulum and surrounds. Our day was aided by a second guide, Claudio, with an incredible eye for the birds and a totally infectious enthusiasm for everyone he/we spotted. Driver, Sergio, shepherded us safely and carefully over a wide variety to roads and trails of varying conditions 0 a very pleasant presence.
This was definitely the highlight of our time in Tulum.

Wonderful day trip. I highly recommend it. Worth the money.

This was one of my most memorable experience here in tulum and I would actually do this again. There was a little bit of everything here as far as activity, culture and sightseeing. The tour guide Niko was an excellent guide. He was very knowledgeable about the area, culture and history. He has Excellent customer service skills and well equipped with everything that I needed to accommodate me on the tour. My favorite part was the biking and the Mayan family lunch. I have learned so much just on this one trip.

Juan Carlos is the best guide I ever had

The tour and especially our tour guide, Said, surpassed all expectations. We had an amazing time. He was incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and provided fun information the whole day. He was respectful and courteous to us, and everyone we interacted with. He drove safely and the car was clean. He acted as if he was genuinely interested in every we word we said.

His tour of Coba seemed effortless and well thought out. We enjoyed Punta Laguna, saw many monkeys. I was nervous about canoeing, so Said paddled for me. I really appreciated the attention he paid to my partner and me. He really was adaptable and flexible for anything we wanted to do. I bought a bag that was hand embroidered by Mayan people that live near Punta Laguna that feels more special than your average printed souvenir bag.

He took us to a wonderful place for a Mayan lunch. I mentioned to Said that I love gardening as a hobby, so Said talked to me about plants we saw throughout the tour. I don’t know if talking about plants was supposed to be part of the tour, but I think Said adapted and added it in since I mentioned it.

I randomly told Said that I love hummingbirds, so he told me about the ancient Mayans beliefs about hummingbirds. and then he found one in the wild to point out to me. It was a very happy moment for me. I regret not giving him a bigger tip. I don’t know if Mexico Kan Tours allows this, but I would even consider requesting Said by name because it doesn’t matter which tour you take with him, he will figure out what you like and make you happy. That was my experience. Thank you to Mexico Kan Tours and Said. I highly recommend this tour.
