Worth a visit to support the weavers in the cooperative, and can be combined with nearby attractions

We took a taxi from near the Cathedral/Zocalo to the weaving cooperative for 40 pesos and a van (14 pesos for 2) back to the Centro, after visiting the Museo Jtatik Samuel, which we also enjoyed very much. Both are on the road to Chamula and Zinacantan.

There’s a sign for the cooperative on the side road through the small town of La Quinta San Martin. The side road starts just past the small chapel on the main road.

The various buildings and the setting with a mountain backdrop are quite pretty. A plaque on a wall credits New Zealand with some of the funding. One walks down a driveway and asks to see the tienda. Someone will unlock it and you are free to look through shelves of shawls, scarves, pillow covers, and clothing, etc., all of which has been woven on backstrap looms in nearby towns. Last year we saw some pedal looms in a back workshop area and a few young people were being taught how to use them.

The cooperative is within walking distance of the pretty restaurant Jardines de San Cristobal and the Museo Jtatik Samuel (in the direction of San Cristobal and a longer walk) that honors archbishop Ruiz, the beloved "Red" Bishop.
