One of my favorites

Popular Camote is one of the three local restaurants I take friends visiting Chelem for the first time. The atmosphere is great, the food is great, and you can’t beat the service. The seafood is always fresh, like it just came off the boat fresh. My particular favorites are the pescado frito and the stuffed fish filets. Some of the best in Chelem.

Wonderful people, food, and tequila

We stop here at least 4 times a week for tequila, beer, and good company. If you want great fish have questions or need information, stop by and have a good time!

Perfect stop for lunch and a cervesa!

We actually stopped here a few times during our week in Chelem because of the friendly people and the yummy food. If you are looking for authentic Mexican seafood don’t miss this little spot. The workers are very friendly and accommodating. The beers are cold and you can get cocktails as well. The ceviche is excellent and the pescado frito (whole - yes head on - fish deep fried) is out of this world. It is served with fresh tortillas and sauces as mild or spicy as you wish. This is NOT an American fish taco - it is an experience you should not miss. Oh, and did I mention how great the people are? Prices are crazy reasonable especially when you consider all the extra little dishes you get with your lunch. YUMMM!

Great cafe

I found this little face because they had live music that was playing. It was a treat! The waiter was very patient with my limited Spanish. I got the cheese empanadas delish! I also got the shrimp with garlic and a Coke. The total was 9.00 us. Very good portions and I would return.

Consistently delicious seafood

This is one of my favorite local restaurants and always a stop every visit. The pescado Frito, shrimp dishes and ceviche (usually a botana) are tasty and worth the wait.

I already miss Camote...

I’m just sitting here in California dreaming of fried fish and ceviche and wishing I could go back to El Popular Camote. Really good ceviche...and pescado frito... Every time I visit the Yucatan, I make a point of going to the coast for whole deep fried fish. If you’re planning a trip to Merida, this is a great day trip. See the pink flamingos, swim in the ocean, and then go eat fried fish at El Popular Camote. You won’t be disappointed.
