Fantastic birding and a wonderful Chichen Itza visit!

Ichi is an expert birder, professional guide, a fantastic guy--and a real advocate for preservation of the spectacular natural world of the Yucatan. I am not an experienced birder and my daughter is not a birder at all but we absolutely treasured our 10 hours or so with Ichi. We saw an incredible number of wonderful birds, toured Chichen Itza, and visited a non-touristy cenote. Ichi has been sharing his knowledge and his passion for birding with children in a neighboring town and three of them, who all had their own binoculars (compliments of Ichi no doubt), joined us for one part of our birding expedition. Their appreciation for their "maestro" was apparent! He is changing many lives. Everything other reviewers have written is correct, you can’t go wrong with Ichi. We saw mot mots, a black catbird, northern potoo, mangrove cuckoos, parrots, a gorgeous bat falcon, and many MANY more! I highly recommend Ichi whether it’s for a big tour of all the sights of the Yucatan or for a very focused birding expedition. You will be so glad you met him!

me and my son have spent a day with Itchi on bird watching tour near by valladolid. Itchi has been a super guide and has showed us not only many exquisite birds but also helped us to get tickets to Chitchen itza and led us to a hidden cenote gem where we have reloaded our batteries after an busy day. My son, aged 8 liked him too and both have played together in the water while I have been relaxing swimming and cooling in the green deep. I really regret we could not join Itchi for the night bird watching but my son was too tired after so many attractions witchin just one day! Many thanks to Itchi.

Great days of birding with Ichi

Great birding with Ichi in Yucatan (Yucatan Jay Expeditions)

We were living in Merida in January and February of 2021. During that time, we went out birding with Ichi on four separate occasions. We went to Chuburna, Misnebalam, Valladolid, and Tobxila. These are all different habitats and led us to see a wide variety of birds. Ichi has an excellent ear and is able to identify and locate birds quickly. I was always impressed by the numbers of birds he was able to point out just from the car. Going out with Ichi is more like going out with a very good birding friend than a slick packaged tour. He is very accommodating as to itineraries and schedules. If you want to stop in a town to see a church or head out for a particular bird, he is always willing to alter plans. During COVID, he was very careful about masking and driving with windows open. We felt like all protocols were followed.

Looking for an elusive bird!

We had two excellent birding mornings with Ismael around Valladolid. The first excursion was to Tinum where we birded the dry woodland - Ismael was first class at finding birds in difficult terrain using his own imitation of a collared forest falcon to lure one from a cenote and quickly identifying five tanagers, yellow tailed and orange orioles, Yucatan flycatcher and jay, rose throated becard, ferruginous pygmy owl and many others.
The second morning towards Catbej we visited woodland, heathland and grazing areas with a different selection including ovenbird, blue grosbeak, indigo bunting, gold fronted woodpecker, Vaux’s swift, bat hawk, ani etc. The Cenote de Don Roque was a special place featured on a BBC film, where coffee. is grown in the microclimate inside the cenote accessed by climbing down a natural ladder of tree roots.
Ismael is a very professional birder and a very personable man who is good company and respectful of the limitations of some of us older birders... We saw some fifty species in a relaxed and enjoyable pajareada. Thank you Ichi! This was just before the pandemic broke so we had great memories to keep us going during the lockdown when we got back to England.
